Djokovic Stunned by Popyrin in US Open Shocker
In a surprising turn of events at the US Open 2024, Novak Djokovic, the reigning champion, was defeated by Australian Alexei Popyrin in a match that has sent ripples through the tennis world. Djokovic's 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 loss in the third round marks his earliest exit from Flushing Meadows since 2006 and ends an impressive streak of 18 consecutive years reaching at least the fourth round of the Grand Slam.
Djokovic, who was aiming to secure his 25th Grand Slam title, struggled with his form and fitness. Playing his first hard-court tournament since March, the Serb appeared physically and emotionally drained, possibly from the demanding Olympic campaign where he secured gold in Paris earlier this month. His performance was marred by an alarming 32 double faults over the course of the tournament, with 14 of those coming in the match against Popyrin.
Popyrin, who had previously faced Djokovic three times without a win, seized the opportunity with a display of powerful tennis. The Australian’s relentless aggression and precision proved too much for Djokovic, who was unable to summon his trademark resilience. Popyrin’s victory is particularly notable as it comes just weeks after his breakthrough ATP Masters 1000 win in Montreal, highlighting his rise in the tennis ranks.
The loss for Djokovic means that, for the first time since 2017, he will end a season without a Grand Slam title. This year also marks a historic shift as none of the Big Three—Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, or Roger Federer—will claim a major, a phenomenon not seen since 2002.
As Djokovic reflects on his performance, he acknowledged the challenge of returning to peak form after a grueling Olympic stint. “I just felt out of gas,” Djokovic admitted. “From the very beginning of this tournament, I struggled to find my rhythm. It’s a disappointment, but life moves on.”
Popyrin, now set to face Frances Tiafoe in the fourth round, expressed his elation at the result. “To beat a player like Djokovic and make it to the fourth round is a dream come true,” he said. “I took my chances today and played some of my best tennis.”
With Djokovic’s departure and Alcaraz’s earlier exit, the men’s singles draw is wide open, and all eyes will be on the emerging players who could seize this unexpected opportunity at the US Open.
