The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) is gearing up to roll out an innovative pilot project that uses telecom-powered digital twin technology to understand and improve the city’s mobility patterns.

This initiative will harness anonymised data from mobile networks, including call detail records (CDRs), tower location pings, and app usage logs, to track how people travel within the city. Combined with other datasets like GPS logs from public transport, CCTV footage, and traffic sensors, the system will generate highly accurate origin–destination matrices—key to identifying where trips begin, end, and how long they take.

Pilot Project with Big Ambitions

The pilot phase will focus on a selected transport corridor to test the technology’s capabilities. If successful, the model will be expanded to cover the entire metropolitan area, offering a real-time, dynamic picture of Chennai’s traffic flow and commuter behaviour.
