BMC Marks Major Progress on Powai–Ghatkopar Water Tunnel Project

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has achieved a key breakthrough in its Powai–Ghatkopar water tunnel initiative. This strategic infrastructure project aims to enhance water supply reliability and pressure management across eastern Mumbai, while addressing leakage and distribution losses. As a part of Mumbai’s long-term water infrastructure upgrade, this tunnel development reflects the city’s commitment to sustainable urban planning and resource optimization.

BMC Marks Major Progress on Powai–Ghatkopar Water Tunnel Project

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced the successful completion of a crucial phase in the Powai–Ghatkopar water tunnel project. Designed to strengthen Mumbai’s urban water distribution system, the tunnel marks a major step toward modernizing the city’s aging infrastructure.

The 5.75 km tunnel, running between Powai and Ghatkopar, aims to ensure uninterrupted and efficient water supply to several densely populated eastern suburbs. This gravity-based tunnel will replace old surface pipelines that have long suffered from leakage, low pressure, and operational inefficiencies.

Once fully operational, the tunnel is expected to significantly reduce water loss due to seepage and improve pressure regulation. It also plays a key role in the city’s disaster management and emergency preparedness by acting as a secure underground conduit.

This initiative is part of BMC’s broader water supply masterplan that includes a network of interconnected tunnels across Mumbai to meet growing urban demands and improve delivery efficiency.

The successful tunneling under densely populated urban zones reflects BMC’s engineering capabilities and its ongoing focus on sustainable infrastructure development.
